The City

CHARLEROI

The green “Valley of Peace” by the Sambre River is the natural environment of the Brewery “Abbaye d‘Aulne“.
Close to the Brewery is the city of Charleroi, also located at the bank of the Sambre River. The previous name of the city -founded in the year 853- were Carnotus, Karnoit (980) and Charnoy (1188).
In the 17th century the south of the today’s Belgian Kingdom became part of the Kingdom of Spain, the so called Spanish Netherlands.

The Spanish Governor of the Netherlands, Francisco de Moura, acquired 1666 the Manorial of Charnoy to establish a fortification. To honor of the Spanish King, Charles II (1661–1700), the Governor renamed the city in Charleroi.
Nowadays, the city of Charleroi is the biggest city in Wallonia (the French speaking part of Belgium). The “Walloon Rooster” is the emblem of the Wallonia and the City of Charleroi.

“BIÈRE BLANCHE”

“Bière Blanche” or Wheat beer is a wheat ale style that originated in Belgium hundreds of years ago. Our “Blanche” stands in the tradition of Belgian craftsmanship to produce this special beer.
Belgian monks were the first to discover the unique recipe around 1445. The first wheat beers were incredibly sour, therefore the monks started experimenting with orange peel, licorice and coriander from the colony Curacao.

Today the Belgian wheat beers are still brewed in the tradition of the former recipes.
The smell of Blanche de Charleroi is reminiscent of oranges, coriander, and pineapple.
A champagne-like sparkle and slightly sharp notes enliven the palate. Impressively fine and mild body with a finish accompanied by the fruity flavors.
